Community Response
To fulfill our church’s mission to “love and heal our community,” we are currently partnering with the Dallas Interfaith Housing Coalition, CitySquare (formerly Central Dallas Ministries), The Bridge, and the Dallas/Ft. Worth Institutional Committee.
Our Partnership with the Interfaith Housing Coalition (IHC)
The IHC mission is “To be the Hands of Christ helping families transition to self-sufficiency and new hope, [where] every night, every child [has] a home and a hope for the future.”
In 1985, two local churches founded IHC in order to provide transitional housing and support services to homeless families. IHC seeks to stabilize families that are in situational homelessness so that they can move forward. The Coalition provides individualized and comprehensive programs for residents with a holistic approach that addresses the root issues of generational poverty and homelessness, helping families transform their lives through systemic, enduring change.
Details about the wonderful work IHC is doing can be found on their website: www.interfaithhousingcoalition.org
Our Volunteers at IHC
We are blessed to support and work alongside the dedicated IHC staff. Currently, we participate in several areas to help the families at IHC.
Setting up a new family residence
When a new family has been approved to enter the IHC program we provide furniture, bedding, linens, toiletries, toys, accessories, kitchen supplies and 30 days worth of food for an apartment.
We also personalize the family’s new home so that it reflects their needs based on the numbers and ages of children. We furnish several apartments each year. Volunteers are needed when IHC calls us about the need to set up a new family residence

Sponsoring a family
In addition to furnishing residences, we partner with a family to provide mentoring and encouragement through activities such as outings for the children, helping with holiday and birthday celebrations, and, when we can, providing support for the family’s special needs. We strive to develop a relationship with these families and maintain contact with them even after they leave IHC.
Our Partnership with CitySquare (formerly Central Dallas Ministries)
CitySquare is a faith-based organization that works to build genuine community in the inner city. Touching the lives of over 50,000 of its neighbors each year, CitySquare works to feed the hungry, heal the sick, provide housing to the homeless, and renew hope in the lives of those struggling with poverty. The organization defines itself as “a group of neighbors working with neighbors; we respond with compassion to our neighbors’ most pressing needs and also work to connect them to opportunities to complete their lives.”
Our church has developed a partnership with CitySquare so that we have a place to refer people who come to our church and Reading Room looking for humanitarian assistance. We host an Operation Donation Weekend collection drive the last weekend in March and October. The CitySquare truck comes to our parking lot during those weekends to accept donations from the community of new and “gently used” items such as furniture, toys and games, clothing, bedding, appliances, lawn equipment, tools, bicycles, etc. The truck will also pick up donations that are too large to be brought to the church.
Detailed information about CitySquare and the wonderful work that they provide for the community can be found on their website: www.citysq.org.
Our Volunteers at the Second Chance Cafe at the Bridge

The Bridge serves 3 meals a day, 7 days a week at their Second Chance Café. Third Church Volunteers assist with the dinner service from 5:30 – 7:00 PM on the first Monday and fifth Tuesday of each month. We find this volunteer work exceptionally rewarding. All are welcome to join our team; you do not have to be a church member! Please contact the clerk for more information or to sign up.
More information about The Bridge can be found on their website: www.thestewpot.org.
Our Institutional Activities
Under the umbrella organization, the Dallas/Fort Worth Institutional Committee, volunteers from our church assist in conducting Christian Science services at local prisons and institutions.
At all of the services, participants are encouraged to ask questions and share their faith. We have found those who attend to be grateful for and responsive to the healing message about God’s love.
